Sister (Lead Supporting)

  • Description: Protective yet nurturing, she is the caretaker of her younger brother and is deeply rooted in Gullah traditions. Must convey warmth and strength.
Remo (Supporting)

  • Ethnicity: Black/African descent
  • Description: Friendly, inquisitive, supportive. Companion to Boy (main character).
Boss Lady (Supporting)

Age Range: Mid-to late 40’s to early 60’s
  • Female/Femme-presenting/gender non-conforming 
  • Ethnicity: Black/African descent
  • Description: Confident and commanding with presence.  Open to all body types.
Extras – Oyster Factory Workers
  • Age Range: (Any age from 12-75)
  • All genders
  • Ethnicity: Black/African descent
  • Description: Workers in a bustling Gullah-Geechee oyster factory. This scene highlights the daily labor and camaraderie of the community. Must be comfortable with light physical work and seafood (miming oyster shucking, carrying baskets of fish, crabs).

The casting process will prioritize actors with connections to the Gullah-Geechee community
and an understanding of its cultural nuances.

Project Overview:
Bateau is a short film set in a Gullah-Geechee fishing community during the Reconstruction Era in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Blending realism and surrealism, the story follows a young Gullah boy navigating grief and transformation after the disappearance of his grandfather.

We are seeking dedicated performers to bring this culturally rich story to life.
